An internship at Waner is much more than just a way to earn college credit and gain work experience. You will be given the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in every aspect of the construction process, led by hands-on mentors who are invested in your success. The skills you gain during your internship will set you up for a successful career in construction management, and apply well to many other career opportunities.

Internship positions

FIELD ENGINEER INTERNS

Field Engineer Interns report directly to the onsite Superintendent and have a wide range of responsibilities; most notably project layout and control.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Review of project plans and specifications for use in layout and control.

  • Establishment of benchmarks.

  • Calculations of Northing and Easting coordinates for input into survey equipment.

  • Staking / layout of grades, site improvements, foundation systems, etc.

  • Building interior layout of underground, slab, walls, blocking, backing and finishes.

  • Assist Superintendent with project

  • Jobsite safety / stormwater audits

  • Attend project meetings

OFFICE ENGINEER INTERNS

Office Engineer Interns report directly to the Project Manager and have a wide range of responsibilities; most notably project bid delivery, submittals and documentation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Compile bid packages and facilitate bid delivery

  • Submittal and shop drawing management and review

  • Assist Project Managers with any project correspondence

  • Prepare, log and manage RFI correspondence

  • Project start-up procedures, including permitting and plan review

  • Project meeting minutes

  • Preparation of subcontracts, purchase agreements and change orders

  • Assemble project closeout documents including: operations and maintenance manuals (O&M), as-built drawings and warranty letters

What you will learn

  • Become familiar with the RFI process 

  • Learn how to communicate, coordinate, resolve conflict, and assess work with subcontractors

  • Learn and understand how to effectively complete change orders and/or amendments to the contract

  • Become familiar with MEP systems to better understand bids and scope of work

  • Learn about owner/GC/architect/engineer relationships and how the coordination between parties affects the construction process and project outcome.

  • Learn and understand the inspections and permits process for different activities on site.

  • Learn how the superintendent coordinates and schedules MEP subs 

  • Develop skills for project layout and job site surveying.

Upon completion of our internship program, you will have a solid foundation for success and many of our interns are hired to full-time Office Engineer positions after graduation.

Waner career paths

Career Paths

We have a “grow from within” philosophy for our company staff. The majority of our employees begin their career with Waner Construction as Office Engineers immediately following their graduation from college. These same employees progress up the hierarchy to a Field Engineer or Estimator role, then Superintendent, and ultimately Project Manager. Through this progression, our employees embrace all aspects of the construction process to fully understand how to provide the highest level of service and support possible.
